Fixed by a proclamation of 31 January 1957, so always between 8 and 14 October.
Fixed by a law signed on 26 December 1941 and listed among the federal holidays today (5 U.S.C. § 6103), so always between 22 and 28 November.
Because both rules count weekdays from the start of neighbouring months, the gap never changes: American Thanksgiving is always 45 days after Canadian Thanksgiving.
People often say Thanksgiving is the last Thursday of November. It is the fourth — in 1941 the House of Representatives first voted for "the last Thursday", and the Senate changed it to the fourth — so in a year when November has five Thursdays, the two are different days.
That happens 4 times between 2026 and 2035: Thanksgiving falls on , , and , and November still has one more Thursday after it.
This page belongs to Giftwise, an iPhone app for birthday reminders and gift ideas. It keeps each person's birthday, reminds you a week ahead, the day before and on the day, and holds gift ideas and a wishlist for that person.
Thanksgiving is not one of the holidays Giftwise offers, and a date you add yourself (a Pro feature) repeats on the same day of the month every year — so for Thanksgiving, look the date up here.
