Divide your target by 100 and write what each box is worth. Color one in each time you put that amount aside.

Blank sheets to download

Nothing to type: print them and write the numbers in by hand. They are Letter size and print on A4 too.

Prefer a spreadsheet to paper? The savings tracker spreadsheet is a free file for Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets, with a sheet for goals, a log of deposits and a sheet for sinking funds.

How the boxes are worked out

Each box is worth the target divided by the number of boxes. Color in a box each time you put that amount aside, and when every box is colored you have set aside the target. When the target divides evenly, every box is the same:

What each box is worth when the target divides evenly
Target25 boxes50 boxes100 boxes
$500$20$10$5
$1,000$40$20$10
$2,500$100$50$25
$5,000$200$100$50
$10,000$400$200$100

When it does not divide evenly, the boxes are rounded down to the cent and the last box takes the rounding, so the boxes always add up to the target exactly. A target of $1,234.56 over 100 boxes is 99 boxes of $12.34 and a last box of $12.90; on the sheet the last box has a dashed outline. A box has to be worth at least a cent, so a tiny target needs fewer boxes.

The thermometer

The thermometer has ten marks, a tenth of the target each, rounded to the cent. Color the tube up to a mark when you have put that much aside, and write the date next to it. For a target of $5,000 the marks are:

The ten marks of a thermometer for a target of $5,000
10%$50020%$1,00030%$1,50040%$2,00050%$2,500
60%$3,00070%$3,50080%$4,00090%$4,500100%$5,000

Paper, or a jar on your phone

Pennyjar is an iPhone and iPad app that does the same job without the crayons, on its Goals tab: a goal with a target is a jar that fills as you record deposits, and the list shows what is saved in all your goals. You can add a plan that says how much to put in each time to get there by a date.

It is a record: it never holds or moves money and it calculates no interest. Two goals are free; Pennyjar Pro, one payment for the whole app, removes the limit.
